A Place to Flourish

The long debate is over. I've decided to begin a blog with the hope that I'll be more dedicated to producing substantial work as a result. I am a calligrapher. For several years I've debated whether blogging would steal precious studio time from me or motivate me to use my studio time more effectively. I am launching this blog optimistic that the later will prevail. I love lettering wedding envelopes and place cards, and yet I long to create finished pieces suitable for my local guild's exhibitions. I have a treasure-trove of ideas. I want to become more disciplined in moving these ideas from my mind into my hands and out of my studio.

So come along... I hope you'll take the journey with me. My desire is for this to be a place to flourish!

  1. Welcome to the blog world! Just with your first few posts I'm intrigued and can't wait to see more.

I love your desk! It's so unique, I've never seen anything like it before. Is it handmade? Or was it a desk meant for a different purpose other than calligraphy? Just curious.

Thanks for sharing and, again, welcome!

  2. Thank you so much! I'm terribly clumsy at this point, but I want to get better at blogging.

I have a "U" shaped work space. This photo doesn't show it very well. The giant, wooden toybox my Uncle made for my kids is on the left hand side, just beneath my window is my light table where I do all my envelope work, and to the right is the drafting table. The drafting table is a Desk-O-Matic II. Here's a better view (I hope!)

It was gifted to me by another calligrapher, but originally it was used in the drafting department at Allison Transmission in Indianapolis. It's great!
