1 Corinthians 13 - Calligraphy Flourish Friday

This is a low resolution, watermarked image of my calligraphic interpretation of 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7 (NIV).  I have just updated my permission agreement with Zondervan/HarperCollins (the USA Copyright holder for the NIV), and this piece is now available as a print directly from me. (High resolution without watermarks)  Contact me if you're interested. My email address can be found on the upper right side of  my blog's homepage.

Wishing you a great weekend.
Go forth and flourish!

Flourish Friday - Calligraphy Exhibit at Gallery 145

Today through the end of November my work will be on display at Gallery 145 in Carmel, Indiana.  I'm grateful for the opportunity to have over 30 pieces in the exhibit.

However, it was a little tricky loading everything into the car - sort of like working a jigsaw puzzle. :)

Lucky for me Gallery 145's coordinator, Deborah Luce, was in charge of hanging all the pieces.

Deborah is almost finished - just a few pieces left to go.

Finished!

Some of what I am calling my Calligrapix.

Having a deadline for this exhibit was good for me.  I had to focus on pieces I wanted to create rather than meeting a client's expectations.  It forced me to be my own client.

If you will be in the Indianapolis area between now and the end of November, I hope you'll stop by Gallery 145.  (See map below) Most of the pieces are for sale. There are price sheets at the reception desk, or I can email you a price sheet.

Calligraphy Flourish Friday - Mandala and Bible Verses

©Jane Farr Calligraphy & Design LLC
I made a few cards this week. The above mandala was done with Moon Palace Sumi and a Zebra G. I wanted to add some corner flourishes. I'm not in love with these corners, but there are parts I'm in like with. :)  More practice and refinement is needed.

For the Psalm 23:4 card I used gouache, a flat brush, and a Hiro 700 nib. I went back over parts of the flower with the same color gouache mixed with Peal Ex powder.  It still need something, so I added some touches of Dr. Martin's Bleedproof White to the center of the flower.

I am trying to be more disciplined about lettering bible verses.  During my quiet time, I'm always jotting down scripture references which I intend to letter "someday."  For this week at least, I actually followed through on a couple.  Both Isaiah 54:10 and Hebrews 6:19 were done with Moon Palace Sumi and a Zebra G comic nib.
***Update:  If you are interested in prints of any of my work, please contact me. You can find my email above on the right. Thank you! Unless otherwise noted, all work on this site is ©Jane Farr Calligraphy & Design LLC. All Rights Reserved.***
Thank you all for your continued support of A Place to Flourish.
I appreciate your comments and emails.  I enjoy my wedding calligraphy business very much, but your support spurs me on to include other types of lettering in my daily life.

Enjoy your weekend!

Calligraphy Flourish Friday - Isaiah 40: 28-31

I did this piece yesterday for a friend that has been put through the ringer.
She mentioned that she had just read Isaiah 40: 28-31 and how it was speaking to her exhausted soul.

Isaiah 40 is a favorite passage for many.
I wanted to design an eagle that "soared," but it takes me so long to sketch things out.  I always fuss too much over the details that probably don't matter.  I felt it was more important to get the piece lettered and delivered even though the eagle is more Early American than Soaring Deliverer.

The paper is a pretty, green Canson Mi- Teintes - although you certainly can't tell by the photos.
I used walnut ink and a Hiro 700 nib for the eagle & scripture and a vintage Principality for the flourishes at the bottom.

I want to thank Australian calligrapher and artist Ronnie Ayliffe of Calligraffia for the lovely post she did on A Place to Flourish and my blogging experience.  You can read Ronnie's post by clicking here.

I have really appreciated all your lovely comments and emails.
Thank you! Thank you! :)
I hope you all have a flourishy Friday and a wonderful weekend.
We are heading into my favorite time of the year on this side of the world!

Moleskine Play

I needed to take a few hours break from wedding work.  I've kept journals off and on since I was in junior high, but only began keeping "art journals" since about 1999.  You can see more of my art journals here.  Every year I list as one of my goals to work more consistently in my various art journals, but it's hard to do when your work space and play space are the SAME space.  It felt good to clear a spot and play this morning, although I see I dated it two days from now. I must be looking forward to the weekend!

I love this poem by Emily Dickinson:

Crumbling is not an instant's Act
A fundamental pause
Dilapidation's processes
Are organized Decays.

'Tis first a Cobweb on the Soul
A Cuticle of dust
A Borer in the Axis
An Elemental Rust.

Ruin is formal - Devil's Work
Consecutive and slow -
Fail in an instant, no man did
Slipping - is Crash's law.

It's a good reminder that it's the small, daily choices we make that can lead to our downfall.
Here's to keeping the Cobwebs off our Souls!

(I'm sorry for any duplications - I had to edit this post.)

Good Friday Calligraphy Flourish

Since this is A Place to Flourish, I thought I would start posting a calligraphy flourish each Friday. Here is a flourish for Good Friday.
